The rise of EVs – Are electric cars the future?

0800 840 4040

The EV technology has greatly developed over the past few years and it shows no signs of stopping. With a greater EV infrastructure and the Government’s financial schemes available for both residential and commercial properties, there’s no better time to make the transition to electric vehicles and become more environmentally conscious.

As of the end of June 2022, there were more than 510,000 electric cars registered in the UK. In addition, 2021 saw a 92% increase compared to 2020 in terms of registrations, with more than 395,000 electric cars registered in the UK.

The increase in electric vehicles sales has also been attributed to the consumers’ enhanced social responsibility to protect the wider environment and the greater selection of vehicles designed to suit any taste and budget. Therefore, the future looks bright for the EV industry and its infrastructure continues to take shape to meet the unique needs of EV drivers.

According to ZapMap, there were 32663 charging points across the UK, across 19,960 charging locations by the end of June 2022. This represents a 34% increase in the number of charging devices since June 2021.

What makes Electric Vehicles special?

The Net Zero Carbon strategy set out by the Government has allowed electric cars to take the spotlight and ministers have invested £620m in grants for electric vehicles and dedicated street charging points to make EVs more accessible and affordable for everyone.

The Net Zero target aims to dramatically reduce the greenhouse emissions to tackle climate change and become carbon neutral by 2050. While investing in an EV is an important decision, electric vehicles have numerous benefits that will help drivers reduce their carbon footprint and cut back up to 40% in CO2 emissions.

When it comes to design, electric cars have some exciting state-of-the-art features that will make your journey more comfortable and pleasant. Firstly, the EV’s engine doesn’t produce that much noise compared to petrol or diesel cars, as the motor is smaller than an internal combustion engine. In addition, all electric cars are automatic and they come equipped with an air conditioning system, advanced sat nav, climate control, touch screen capabilities, fast charging and park assist cameras, just to name a few.

With a wider selection than ever before on the market, drivers are spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing their first electric vehicle. From Audi Q4 e-Tron to Tesla Model 3 and the Porsche Taycan, the sleek design, impressive battery range and smooth alloy wheels will make for a refined driving experience.

Why should you consider switching to electric vehicles?

If the reasons listed above were not enough, keep reading! Electric vehicles can help you save money on fuel, especially considering the growing inflation and living costs. You can simply charge your electric car at home via a dedicated charging point or use the public charging points available across the UK.

While the initial costs seem more expensive at the beginning, owning an electric car is more cost-effective compared to petrol or diesel-powered cars. To help with the EV costs, the Government currently offers an EV HomeCharge Scheme (EVHS) and a Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS). The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV)’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme covers up to 75% of the costs of installing a home chargepoint, up to a limit of £350.

Electric vehicles are very dependable and are less likely to break down, hence why you won’t need to pay regular visits to your local garage. Low maintenance but high in performance, electric vehicles are certainly here to stay and with the Government’s ban of petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the number of EVs is predicted to soar in the next decade.
